“As it was of old it is to-day –Wherever gypsies go there the witches are, we know” from The Gypsies circa 1882
I was inspired to paint this as a result of coming across some symbols used by gypsies in spells and in writings, paintings and engravings. Repeated two or three times throughout the painting are the following symbols and wishing charms. What started as purely symbolic ended up taking on a feeling of romance.
Each symbol attracts a different part of life’s wishes – success, dreams, love, prosperity and health. I think whoever buys this painting will be a believer in spells! I know I do!
“Nine requisites for a contented life:
Health enough to make work a pleasure.
Wealth enough to support your needs.
Strength enough to battle with difficulties and overcome them.
Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them.
Patience enough to toil till some good is accomplished.
Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor.
Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others.
Faith enough to make real the things of God.
Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
OIL and mixed medium on Canvas 10 x’s 12 inches

And to you Susan – I think he says it all there also and it is not necessary to follow any one religion to do so. Those 9 requisites are clear in all religions and philosophies I am acquainted with and appreciate. hugs

Hi Kim, The purple ‘flower’ is actually the symbol for prosperity. It is difficult to tell with such a small photo but yes – you are attracted to $$$ right now – May the charm be yours. xx

Love your painting of gypsy symbols. Maybe it will might like a vision board. Maybe if you hang it where you can see it often it will bring loads of good things into your life.

Suzanne – I keep watching it but I feel it belongs to another. I can’t explain why. In the meantime, until it is claimed I will use your vision as mine. Thank you xx

I have been delving deeper into Gypsies and their reputations, wondering at the negativity and found that they are closely related to white witches. The casting of spells is widely shared amongst ethnic groups. Fascinating subject!
