The Music Man
With chairs lining all four walls
Sounds of snores fill up the void
They sat and sat and sat
For lack of any caring
Life goes on even after
The joy of living has long departed
Say the young and restless
For lack of any caring
Into the hall with all the chairs
Enters one man only
He glances ‘round the room
Not lacking any caring
His instrument unfolds itself
From the satchel on his back
Preparing to engage with them
Not lacking any caring
At first the notes are mellow
To stir the people deep in sleep
Gently slowly gingerly
They awaken to the beat
One by one they start to smile
Singing softly to a song they all recall
‘La Vie en Rose’ plays on and on
They awaken to the beat
He held out his hand to her
Watching closely if she’d blush
And sure enough those eyes of hers
Looked into his with love
And dance they did in elegance
Remembering the steps
Of a waltz they’d moved to long ago
He looked to her eyes with love
Soon they all were on their feet
Swaying to the rhythm
Knowing life had changed somewhat
Had no effect today
Forgotten shadows of themselves
Graced the wooden floor
Aging, painful, lonely boredom
Had no effect today

Free Write Friday hosted by Kellie Elmore (thanks Kellie)
It truly does present a challenge because of the instructions to free write and not edit, not even a spelling or punctuation error. It’s a great way to find your own way and test the courage in your soul. This week’s prompt was a lyric from John Mellencamp “Oh yea, they say ‘life goes on’ long after the thrill of living is gone.” – Kellie asked what it meant to me. To me it meant there are many people in this world who should not be written off just because they can no longer live the life of their choice. Their memories of days gone by should be honoured in spite of the inability to express them in order sometimes :). For those who have been lucky to witness the response that Alzheimer patients have to music – you will know what I mean!

Profound poem.
It contains all of life, youth, aging, joy and sorrow. Also hope; there are moments within “the terrible dailiness” that transcend pain and loneliness.

Really like how this reads like the music… Opening in a crescendo, rising to dance and then fades into memory. Beautiful penning for this prompt! Thank you!

Oh girl you do know me!!
I have in fact for my 58th birthday (shhh) bought my first acoustic guitar and a,m learning to play. I have sung all my life, butalw2ays by someone’ else playing. I am taking the action of being independent serious. Living alone for the3 first time in my life, not even a room mate. Playing my music JUST for me for the first time. Its thrilling.
I am delighted to share this with you, as well as visiting you. I am finally getti8ng fully back into the saddle, only this time it is an English Ladies riding saddle. 😉
My heart to you Les~

This made me think of eighth grade dances, and how we evolve back to the things of our youth as we get older.
Very enjoyable read!

Ah yes. I see what you mean and smile at the analogy. No one wanted to be the first up and then no one wanted the night to end. Thanks for coming by. It is so interesting to be shown a new perspective.

I really do thank you Sean. I am feeling impotent these days when it comes to words. They are a struggle and so I am plodding along but never very satisfied.

I love this. It made me think of my grandmother and how they use to have their little get together’s and they would sit around drinking and listening to the big band music.
